Removable Partial Dentures

As the name implies, this is a removable appliance that can replace one tooth or multiple teeth in different locations within the mouth. Along with fixed bridgework, it has been a mainstay in dentistry for replacing teeth. In its most basic application it can be the least expensive way of replacing teeth.

Many patients have difficulty adapting to these poorly designed partials and they frequently wind up in a dresser drawer rather than in the mouth, causing even more problems due to teeth shifting and drifting.

Unfortunately many dentists are not well versed in the more sophisticated designs and application of partials resulting in disappointment and dissatisfaction by the patient. When properly executed, a partial denture can be a predictable and comfortable means of replacing teeth.  Prosthodontists, by virtue of the three years of specialty training, can provide a higher level of treatment in this challenging area of tooth replacement.

ADVANTAGES:

·         Multiple application, from single teeth to multiple teeth

·         Less expensive than fixed bridges and implant treatment

·         Fewer teeth have to be crowned than with fixed bridges

·         With precision attachments, clasp-less partial dentures can be made

DISADVANTAGES:

·         A removable appliance

·         Places pressure on anchor teeth and gum tissues

·         Cosmetics are not always ideal because there are spaces where the teeth and

partial denture meet and color blending is not always inconspicuous

·         Because of the basic design requirements, the clasps and metal bar or plate connectors can

           collect food

·         Food particles can get under the acrylic base

·         Frequent adjustments

·         Precision partials do require more long term maintenance.
